Creating an Application - 23rd March

Wednesday 23rd March 2016                        Creating an Application                     Lecturer: Maz

Evaluation - Creating a Web or Mobile Application

Throughout this module I have felt fully engaged with the lessons, I have been participating within class discussions and have evidenced my own independent research throughout the lead up to the production for my application, using my blog to showcase ideas, methods, pictures etc. The lecturer was at hand for the complications that arose during the production process but I mostly overcame the problems myself, in doing so I learnt new techniques of how to use Adobe Captivate, I decided to refresh my mind with the brief a lot so that I had a clear understanding of the requirements for submission, ways I could go about my work to create an experimental application, I am optimistic about developing this further in the future to make my creation compatible with different platforms like IO's and Windows

I found the first 4 lessons really interesting as we were provided with basic information, taught through various tutorials that the lecturer was running, repeating some of the steps week on week to make sure we had an understanding of how to go about making our app, some of the possibilities that we could offer the user i.e. Geo tagging, interactive buttons, information icons, swipes, slides, clicks for advanced actions etc. I feel like these sessions helped myself to gain an understanding towards any basic functions that I could implement into the application that I am creating.

By the first lesson I had already created a brief for my chosen application which I handed to the lecturer in a print format, he had a glance and started to go through the functions that I had written down, started to develop an understanding of what could be possible in such a short time period of 10 weeks. Further information on my initial idea and feedback can be found here http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/creating-app-design-9th-march.html.

Once I had developed a separate idea I set out for the next 2 weeks to complete my research for the application so that I could make a start on the layout as I felt like time was running out, wanted to follow the running schedule that I had planned week by week and achieve the goals that I had set myself. My research consisted of existing applications, colors, layouts, functions, shapes, target audience, orientation (portrait/landscape), time, advanced buttons etc.

I have managed to develop and create a concrete idea for the "Creating a Web or Mobile application" module for my complimentary studies. I have looked into the aesthetics for similar apps within the google play store, as my application will be primarily designed for my phone, LG Nexus 5, Android. My independent research helped to give my app a specific style, inspired from lots of different concepts that I have looked at which I have evidenced on my blog. My second idea was to create an application that would function as a data collector, the user will be able to fill in a data form, the forms data will be collected and submitted once the user clicks the button at the bottom of the interface "SUBMIT", the idea came into my head through working with the B.T.O (British Trust of Ornithology", I liked the way that they have a program which can record data and I thought that perhaps I could create something similar. On clicking the button I have created a primary email for the form to be sent to, this has been manually set and tested on multiple occasions. Further information about my field of research, ideas generation and analysis of similar apps can be found here http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/creating-app-design-9th-march.html.

My chosen color and layout was based around the website for South West Peregrine ttp://southwestperegrine.org.uk/.  that I have helped to create, I wanted to keep the application that I was creating for the group as similar to the website as possible, once I had created the application I started to publish and upload my app to phone-gap so that I could view and test it on my chosen device, this was made possible by uploading a zip file onto phone-gap, changing the config and res files to make sure that my chosen logo would show up for the application icon, once uploaded I was able to scan the QR code. Whilst in the app I noticed that the logos and buttons has somehow been re-sized, thought it could have something to do with the fact that I was creating a responsive project, I had noticed that the submit button wasn't showing either so I had to repeat the zipping and uploading process about 10-20 times so that everything was view-able (changed the logo) and fully functioning. One of the logos still wasn't working as the bird's beak was merging with the background color, I had to re-upload the logo and position it into captivate as well as overwriting all of the PSD files in the res folder in order for the logo to be correct, another small error that occurred was the play button at the start of the app, I went into the Java script and got rid of the flash notes, so now the application loads up and goes straight into the app which makes it so much quicker and looks professional.

If I was to make this application again I would like to have a logo at the start of the app, I may like to add more links from the website and could play with the idea of Geo tagging to show each group member which site that the data had been collected at. However, I decided not to do this as I felt like anyone could work out the sites of where Peregrine Falcons are located throughout Devon and Cornwall which wouldn't be good as people could do some harm to the population, thinking about this for further development of my application. Perhaps used a bit more time for research, I was following my running order schedule for week on week which can be found here http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/creating-application-16th-march.html.

Overall I feel like I have managed to create a user friendly application for my users to function with, I have added the little extras such as the group's website and a twitter, despite the twitter linking to the group's homepage, you will have to create a twitter and sign in of course to follow the group and catch up with the latest news that is taking place i.e. presentations, talks, data etc. I really like the colors, they stand out, the positioning of the text and logo are in keeping with the website which is what I initially had planned, I like the way that I have set the app to landscape because this gives the front page and the form a really nice feel, everything is spaced out. However, at the start I did set the application for view on portrait but the submit button wasn't showing, once I had fixed that, all the information on the screen was bunched together and it just looked tatty, plus I still wanted my application to be easy to read, easy to function and I wanted the overall product to stand out.

Here is a link to all of my blog-posts for this module http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Creating%20an%20App%20for%20IPad this was definitely an interesting module and I feel as if I have created a satisfying application that can now be put to use for collecting and recording data at anonymous sites.

Contexts of Practice - Evaluation - BCOP

Thursday 17th March 2016           Contexts of Practice              Lecturer: Lucy Leake

Written Evaluation - 750-word piece to sum up the module
Evaluation for Contexts of Practice – Lecturer Lucy Leake

This was definitely an enjoyable and challenging module, I got to learn about different types of theories and the theorists behind them and of course I was able to carry out research to understand their mindsets. The highlights of this module for myself as a film student had to be the short films I made, making a poster and the magazine task where we had to create our own journal article. I liked the way that I worked towards this module, doing my extra research to gather a better understanding of the subjects I was studying, to be able to back up my ideas or understand others opinions within film, helping myself to become a better film critic. I would always try to watch films that we had talked about within class to go more in depth about the styles and connotations of certain directors, filming genres, how we see a certain style and immediately think about the artist that it could be, links to the fact that we might have seen their work in past films.

I really enjoyed learning about monstrous feminine, it was an interesting subject, the way that I could understand the different types of monstrous concepts, which have been used in a wide variety of different films. Here is a link to one that I created: http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/contexts-of-practice.html.

We looked at a few examples of artists work, got me researching how the original artists have generated the ideas to create these fantastic recognizable concepts of art. One of the most interesting pieces that I was shown was from Salvador Dali, I started to look at how he came up with his ideas, how he created the piece “In Voluptas Mors”, I wanted to see if he had created anything similar before. I was fascinated to learn how he had positioned every girl on set, the angle of lighting that he used, what type of camera that he used to take the photograph, all of these different elements appeal to me as I love experimenting with different examples of technology and frame rates. From researching about the forming of this work of art, I started to realise that this wasn't the only skull concept that Dali created, he also created a lot of others with different meanings behind them i.e. campaign posters etc. http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/contexts-of-practice-27th-january.html - Details my review on Ex Machina as well (with references).

Here is a link to the blog that I wrote for my group presentation, the monstrous mood reel that I created with the idea of a search party for a monster as well as a little bit about the script that I read for Bluebeard.

I was really pleased with the way my poster turned out, feel like by super-imposing Johnny Cash’s face on top of Sigmund Freud’s I was able to link the isolation between the both of them, the fact that they both had a problem with drugs, they started to mess their lives up, I then linked this back to a film called Walk the Line to discuss the character of Joaquin Phoenix, this film is based on a true story, Joaquin plays the character of Johnny, once on tour with his band, he starts to take drugs and drink a lot which messes his life up, everything starts to fall apart and people begin to not like who he has become, including his true love, June. Here is a link to the post with my poster and a short summary of what I thought about it. http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/contexts-of-practice-final-poster-3rd.html as well as a blog including the process/ideas of my work http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/contexts-of-practice-2nd-december.html

The best part of the module for me was being able to take a theorist that I have learnt about in class, to research them further in order to develop my very own Journal article, I based my specific article around Non-Place/Place, I looked into Marc Auge and the book that he had written, I really enjoyed writing this piece, I wanted to give the article the format and feeling to that of something that would be located in the National Geographic collection, I loved linking small quotes to my main concept, the idea I had was both challenging and motivating and I can sure enough say that I made it work with relevant links back to my chosen theorist. Here is a link to my blog post containing my finished journal article as a double page magazine spread http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/contexts-of-practice-4th-march.html

Extra: Thought this post where I watched and reviewed King Kong may help towards my research for my mood reel as well even though it was carried out after the presentation http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/contexts-of-practice-28th-february.html

Creating an Application - 16th March

Wednesday 16th March 2016                    Creating an Application              Lecturer: Maz

In Today's lesson I started to create my application, I started of with the front page, had the idea of slapping the logo for my app right in the middle of the page, I wanted to be able to place links in the top toolbar and I wanted to have text above the logo as a hint to let people know that they have to tap the logo in order to get to the form which they can then fill out and submit. I started to then import everything that I had into captivate and work with my initial ideas where I had created a data sheet using Jotform. I started to think about the colour scheme for my application and in the end I decided to stick with the colours that I had set on Jotform so used the swatches icon to drag and drop the same colours across to make my application in keeping and look clean. I started to position the name of the group underneath the logo as well as the subheading which I made a little smaller but used the same text, it looks really nice. Next I moved onto my logo icons, I imported the existing icons for android into photoshop, placed my logo over the top of them and then I saved them as PSD's so that they could be imported into phone gap for viewing on my android phone, I used the notepad to change the orientation to landscape so that the text would all show up on my device.

As well as the target audience I started to think about how I have been progressing through the module week by week, I wanted to make a note somewhere with set goals or any achievements that I will plan to make in the coming weeks of my application design project.

Goals week by week for my apps ideas and further development

Week 1-5 we went through lots of tutorials on how to use different key features of captivate, button operations, geo-tagging, arranging, placement, changing locations, adding interactions, how to layout our apps, working out our screen resolutions etc.

Week 5 I decided to write up all of my ideas for the app that I wanted to create, taking into the account how the application will actually function, how I would like the app to work, I have the idea of every time the application is complete and the form submitted, I feel like there should be an email sent to a certain group email so that they can keep on record a copy of the exact data that has been submitted.

Week 6 - I am going to resolve a few problems that I have come into contact with along the way, I will reupload the zip file to phone gap that I have created so that the logo will appear on the application, I will then try to resize the submit button so that it will show up on the application itself. I may have a look at linking a twitter and website button on the top of the first page which when clicked will be able to open in a new tab to avoid the user losing any forms that they may have been filling out etc. I feel like these links will make the application in keeping with the group's official website layout.

Week 7-9 - I plan to use this time to add any final touches to my application to make sure that the application is working or somewhat useable, make sure that the email function works and that the applications links are fully functioning to direct the user to the groups website and twitter.

Week 10 - I am planning to use this lesson to write up my evaluation for the product which hopefully will be straight forward as I have kept blogs from each session as well as screengrabbing my application at different stages to show my thinking process and how my app has been developed.

EXT. Looking up the lane, car advancing down the track – Early Dawn

Paddy: Nearing the destination Paddy switches off the engine and cautiously rolls the car along the path to a clear vantage point, glancing in the rear view mirror to check all is clear, he manoeuvres himself into a suitable position for a clearer view through the windscreen. He opens the window to listen out for any noises in the vicinity, after a short while he is startled when he hears the crunching of leaves, the sound is becoming louder and closer to Paddy’s car. Suddenly Paddy hears a loud crunch as Camerons Friend (Phil) trips over a large tree branch and rolls into the middle of the path.

Paddy
That was too close for comfort

Paddy looks all around him to discover what the noise was, he notices Phil getting up off the ground through the rear view mirror, Paddy watches as Phil starts to near the back of his car, Paddy turns to look out of the left wing mirror, Phil casts a shadow over the car as he walks past, Paddy shrinks into his seat as he see’s Phil walking very close to the car window. Phil starts to whistle to himself before disappearing out of site further down the lane.

Paddy reaches for the glove compartment, he pulls out a pair of old binoculars and slowly but quietly opens the door, he walks around to the boot where he finds a mac, placing the tracker into the boot of the car he pulls the jacket over him, zipping it all the way up to escape the cold air and shuts the boot (leaving the tracker in the car).

Paddy
Bloody weather! Last I heard it was summer round here.

The wind picks up and a few leaves slap into Paddy’s face as he walks around the corner, sticking to his chest for a few seconds before he brushes them away, he notices two cars up ahead, he positions himself behind a tree, looking out through a gap in the oak with the binoculars, once focused he notices Cameron’s car as well as the car that dropped Cameron off a few days before, making Paddy question who he came into contact with earlier.

Scanning the area with the binoculars, Paddy notices that one of the boots of the cars is wide open, next thing he sees is someone wearing a snoot, covering their face, wearing camo gear, they are walking out of the woodlands towards the scene, he watches as they remove a mallet from the boot and close it over, before heading back into the woods.

By this point Paddy’s heart is racing, quietly getting up of the ground, he cautiously makes his way to the entrance where the camouflaged man entered into the woods. Paddy wants to follow them into the woodlands; he turns to look at both cars and then thinks to himself perhaps the mysterious man was Cameron.

Paddy enters into the woodlands making his way through the crunching leaves, across the river and down beneath the ground into a dark cave. Out the other end of the tunnel, he notices the camouflaged man at the top of the hill waving the mallet he retrieved from the car earlier. Paddy can’t work out who the man is and so scans the area to try and find out who he is waving at, could he be trying to signal the fact that Paddy has been following him. By this point Paddy has taken cover behind a granite rock, he pokes his head up to check out the area but he’s too late, the man has disappeared.

Paddy
Where did they go?

Paddy thinks to himself that the mysterious man must have headed over the back of the hill, perhaps that is where some suspicious activity is taking place, he starts to become puzzled asking himself about why they would need a mallet in the woodlands. He starts to climb the hill, at the top he spots smoke rising out of the treetops, this arouses Paddy’s suspicions thinking, could they be burning evidence of something illegal.

Paddy’s mind starts to work overtime; he wants to get a closer look, travel through the woodlands to find out where the smoke is coming from. He comes across a small clearing positioned a few hundred feet from the bottom of the hill, shaking but aware of his surroundings, Paddy overhears chatter further up the valley.

Cameron’s friend
Whack the head… pack it a punch

Cameron
Ouchhh, stop what the hell are you doing

Cameron’s friend

You asked me to whack the head, my fingers slipped

Started to think about the frames for the opening, middle and ending

Creating an App Design - 9th March

Wednesday 9th March 2016                  Creating an App Design        Lecture: Maz

Ideas Generation

So far for this project I have designed a few ideas to base my application around, at first I had the idea of creating an application that could be used within a film production team; here was the main idea that I had, thinking about the apps usage, capabilities, the reasons as too why I wanted to create this app whilst thinking about the positives that it could have on workflow, time management, organisation etc.

I have a Nexus 5, Android phone. I will be making the application primarily for use on my android phone, I might decide if the App is a success to explore the possibility of creating an application that can be used on multiple platforms.

1st Page - Introduction to my ideas in place

Movie Maker Application Idea - My Main Idea

My inspiration for a mobile application has come about from the need to have a tool at hand to help with all of the needs encountered in the film production processes experienced on the BA Honors Film Production course that I am studying.
Since starting the course, we have been exposed to many different roles required to ensure that any project is well conceived, planned, executed and finally produced. Without all of these component parts and all of the people involved in the process, things can go quickly wrong, ideas be misinterpreted, or things overlooked.

It is also important from an editing and evaluation perspective to be able to refer back to original concepts and ideas to ensure that the final production meets the original objectives.

I have thought about how a Application may allow team members of a project share ideas, record their progress and save data and files to a specified location so as the project develops and grows all of this important information is at hand to other team members as and when required. Otherwise target dates easily get missed, important items overlooked and people are waiting on other people to send required files, all this can lead to a poorly executed project which could be very damaging in giving future work as well as giving yourself a bad name.

Therefore I would like to explore the idea of a Movie Maker Application , which could be a tool used from the start point of a project.

The apps Key Features should include

• Project name

• Team Members and Roles

• Concept / Idea / Task Overview

• Script (file upload and editor)

• Location Scouting (image database inc Geo tagging)

• Story board area

• Camera Angles

• Production Crew Notes , Sound clips - Voice recorder

• Database Area for Equipment and Lighting (tips, hints etc) date-able from learning experiences - what works best in what conditions)

The idea being that as the crew start to bring together their work, ideas and general information, this in turn can be uploaded to a central project storage area, for example a project held within Dropbox, Google Drive or Outlook - whatever the choice of the production company.

The App would be best utilized across Multi platform's of IO's, Android, Chrome - as most companies and their staff, would utilize a variety of mobile platform devices whilst on the move. And would rely on Camera and Satellite technology for recording certain data. The idea that I have in mind is that all of the information gathered can then be used and accessed by the crew at the varying point of production.

I proposed this app too the lecturer to see his opinions on my ideas generation for my chosen application, we spoke about the types of capabilities that I wanted to achieve that I had talked about in my initial plan, he told me that 80% of my application would be achievable including the Geo location, camera phone, storyboard, taking notes, project name, scripts, team members and their roles, however he said that I would need to see a developer if I wanted to achieve the idea of the app being accessed across multiple platforms i.e. google drive, outlook, Dropbox etc, he said that this simply wouldn't be achievable in the timescale that we have left to create this application, I thought it was fair enough, it was a bit upsetting that I would be unable to create what I wanted at first but perhaps I could create something with similar values, I started to research more into the type of apps that exist, could I create an application that could be accessed by multiple people from different locations, could I create an application to support the data work that I do outside of University.

Additional Idea - Functionality

I started to come up with the idea that the app could be used to store data, next I started to look into existing apps, most of the layouts were complicated, lots of buttons, different colors, however thinking about my app I want to make mine user friendly, using jot-form I can provide the user with hints as they hover over different parts of the application. I started to generate a form using jot-form which would consist of the information that I would like to portray within the interface for my application. I thought that by generating a simplistic form, I would be able to use this to show the lecturer what I wanted to achieve with my application, how I wanted the app to feel, work and look for the user, the fact that I wanted to provide hints to help people fill in the boxes, if filled out correctly this could create a form of data about a specific category, once lots of these forms have been filled out we could then compare or find out the difference in numbers over a period of time.

After further research and idea development I have decided that I want to create an application that can be used by people within a group, I want to provide a form or variety of buttons where people can log in their name, fill in data about a Peregrine Falcon (Bird of Prey), this would include information like the number of pairs at any given site, any information that I could relate back to recording Peregrines at lots of different sites in Devon and Cornwall. However, I would like to be able to use abbreviations as I don't want to give out the names of the places that the birds have been located for many reasons, don't want to list them.

A few existing layouts of apps that are used for Data Collecting

Collect - Data Collection Tool- screenshot

Above pictures: I started to have a look at existing applications within the google play folder, which is for the same format for my device that I want to create the app for, as an android app. I have started to think about the layout for my application, I like the look of the layout above in the first application, I think that it is simplistic, could be an idea for how the buttons or boxes to fill out could be placed, adding the idea of a scroll for my application, everything is one page, create directions to let the viewer know that there is more information further down "Show More". I started to look at the types of elements that I wanted my application to consist of, had the idea of letting the user have the option to "Sign In", give them the chance to create their own bio and keep track of the forms that they fill out monthly, obviously I would like to have the group email as the default so that every time the group submit data, it will go through to the groups email, be able to keep a track of all the information. Other than the hints on the page, I would like to create some kind of progress bar for the top of the page, this would allow the user to check whether they have filled out all of the component parts, could explore the idea of having a notification pop up that puts an aster-ix next to the question/part of information that has either been missed or yet to be filled in.

I wanted to do some more research and practice with the colors that I wanted to use for my application, once I had fully created my form within jot-form, I started to tweak the colors, decided to use a similar color to that of the groups website "South West Peregrine Group".

Here is the example of the form that I have created using Jot-form for my application Idea, I now have the correct types of information that I want my users to be able to fill in, I have the idea that once this form has been filled in, I can create a default email which can have this information sent across too for record, the group have their own email address and so I shall choose this for the default email so that everyone in the group can keep a track of the data that has been submitted. The main section at the top will contain the initials of everyone within the group, making it easy to identify who has filled in the form, for example if "Luke Curno" filled in the form, I would pick from the drop down the choice that says LC and then it would be clear that I was the one who has submitted this information.

I started to think about the positioning for the logo, I helped to generate this website for the group, I am going to be using the South West Peregrine Group's logo which I have permissions to use from the groups google drive folder, the logo was created using a program called pages which is for MAC, I could however import the image and save it in Photoshop as a PSD file which would help when importing the file into Adobe Captivate.
As you can see on the website, the logo is positioned directly in the middle of the page, to make my application in keeping with the website I think that I will position the logo in the center at the top of the page with a possible progress bar located underneath. I would like to have the name of the organisation positioned directly underneath the logo, clearly visible, use a bold font to make it stand out.

Additional Ideas - I have been looking into the way that the app could function, thinking about the clicking process and what that could become in aid of. After looking at my creation from Jot Form I thought that the buttons worked really well that displayed Submit, Clear Form and Print Form.

Target Audience - My specific target audience would be aiming towards

Directing and Performance - Film B Evaluation - 9th March

Wednesday 9th March 2016             Directing and Performance          Lecture: Andy and Lucy

Evaluation for Film B - Including classroom work

We were asked to get into small groups, we would allocate a preferred job role we would like to work on throughout the film i.e. Cinematographer, Production Designer, Creative Producer, Editor or the Director of Actors. After working on Film A I thought about changing to a different role but I really wanted to pursue the Cinematography role, I wanted to use this project as a chance to gather an understanding for how to set the lights up on the shoot, I wanted to give myself a real challenge by having the responsibility of setting up the cameras and the lighting for the shoot location. Towards the end, I worked as the co-editor for the project to create the final piece along with Josh who was the editor.

Here is a link to the screen test that I filmed and edited within the first lesson of Film B, I explored how to capture facial expressions, movement in front of camera, I wanted to play around with the lights and camera angles to ensure that I could capture different body movements, the hands moving was my main focus point as well as close-ups on the actors faces.

What I liked

Planning: I thought that the actors interacted within the group chat on Facebook that we set up, we set them a task to generate their own character profiles for the film, they all contributed well and we managed to get each profile which myself and Danielle (Director of Actors) were able to use to create the script, it worked well that we gave them a copy of the script a week before the shoot, this provided them with enough time to practise ideas, get to grips with the main concepts for each of the four scenes that we had created.

As the cinematographer for this project, I feel like it worked by myself reviewing existing films with similar scenes to that of the bar scene that we wanted to achieve, I wanted to see if I could re-create the bar scene from the film "The Fighter" (Directed by David. O Russell), I picked up on the idea that this whole scene was shot handheld which I tried to re-create, adding motion into the frame as well as shooting the piece as if it was from a spectators point of view. I referred back to the annotations that I did on the script as well as an additional shot list that I had on my phone.

Here is a blog post which shows the annotations that I made to the script once the director of actors had finished writing the scenes and ideas for the content of our short film.
http://lukecurnopca.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/directing-and-performance-film-b-bafi104.html

Filming: I thought that the idea of having a test shoot before hand was great, as the cinematographer I was able to play around with the lighting on location, decide on the best camera angles for each scene in the short film, I played around with the zoom, the ISO and took a lot of cutaway footage around the bar, I wanted to explore the idea of changing the focus on certain shots to give the idea that the character would be falling asleep, linking back to our idea in the script of the shy girl starting to feel sick, edited as if it's from her point of view, both fast and slow shots to be suitable for an editing montage of the night. I thought that the actors and the crew worked together well to collaborate to achieve a high-quality film, I worked closely with the director of actors in order to capture the scene, the sound man to ensure that the boom or any shadows weren't cast within the scene, I worked with the editor to think whilst shooting, how would these shots be edited together, would we need more closeups etc. I worked with the production designer and creative producer to think about what would be needed on the shoot to make it feel as if a night out, bottles, pills, lights, colours, clothes etc.

Editing: I thought that the editing stage worked well, again it was a collaborative effort, by having other people at this stage, we were able to bounce ideas off one another which changed pieces of the film around. Myself, Danielle and Josh worked together to arrange the clips into a rough edit which we will work further on for next Monday, we will have a rough edit to work from and the clips that we have planned to use have been renamed so easier for the editor to locate and import into Premiere Pro.

What I didn't like;

Planning: Although as a group the crew were organised throughout this project, I thought that the majority of actors in our group were awful at arranging their time, they never seemed to be free. I thought that it was hard  to interact with the actors, even though we created a Facebook chat, one of the actors doesn't have Facebook, we continuously asked the actors to keep each other updated with the progress, any shooting dates etc.

Filming: We had organised 3 dates where we were going to film, the first date was proposed for a week after the test shoot, everyone agreed but then one of the actors had told us the day we were filming that they couldn't make it, we already had the equipment booked and everything which was a bit annoying, so we had to redo our bookings on multiple occasions to fit their availability. It was annoying for the toilet scene, on the back of the cubicle there was a mirror where the flush was, it took quite a lot of attempts to avoid getting myself and other members of the crew in the frame. One of the main problems that we came across through shooting was from the test shoot, the sound equipment that had been taken out hadn't been checked, the zoom was making a crackling noise, we tried different XLR leads and plugging it into the camera but nothing was working, meant that we had to cancel the shoot, I used this time to film as many cut away shots as I could, thinking about glasses, bottles, pumps, pipes, boxes, pictures, anything that would work as short clips for a montage of the night.

Here is a blog post to the first shoot that we did.

Editing: I think that we could have done with more time for the edit, once we had finished the filming it felt as if we had long enough to complete a decent edit, however I feel like if we had more time, we could have added more sound effects, chosen the music more to fit "The Fighter", thought more about what was going on around the characters as they were talking, I had input on the edit as well,  myself and Josh used work from the shot list and annotating the script which well for the shooting as well as the editing.

Here is a link to my blogpost analysing the bar scene in "The Fighter".

What I think could be improved;

Planning: i think that we could have organised a time to meet the actors throughout the weeks but it seemed as if they weren't available to shoot at the same times we were, they were restricted to the time that they had to keep in contact with us, we still used the film chat on Facebook but I think the extra meeting could have helped with the character profiles and dates to film since one of the actors didn't have a Facebook account.

Filming: I think that I could have taken a few more cutaway shots, make the montage that Josh edited, make it really fast paced, have a variety of slow motion and fast shots to act as if time was passing by, make it feel like a proper night out, the lights could have been dimmed in the room a bit and the additional lighting from the LED panels could have been increased a bit to cast a few shadows when the actors walked past each other within the frame.

Editing: Again I think that we could have used more time to edit the piece together, instead of watching just the Bar scene from the film "The Fighter", I could have watched other scenes from the film.

Overall: Overall I think that the team worked really well together to cooperate throughout the shoot everyone was there to lend a hand on different scenarios, the fact that we managed to get extras from other actors, this helped to make the bar seem busy, helping to form cutaway shots.

Here are loads of shots from our film shoot to show the team as we worked together to collaborate on the shoot.

Directing and Performance - 4th March

Monday 7th March 2016                 Directing and Performance           Lecturer: Andy and Lucy

Planning Work and Shoots

We as the crew have been ready to shoot twice in these past two weeks but the actors keep delaying the shoots due to the work that they have, this has decreased the amount of time that we actually have to shoot and edit our FILM B project which is quite annoying. Never the less, the crew have used the time wisely working together to come up with ideas for filming, lighting, creating mood reels, looking at existing videos, picking up on choice of editing techniques, trying to understand the types of aesthetics that we want our project to contain. I have been working closely with the editor to expand on the shot list I created, I have worked with the director to organise shoots and to provide a list of equipment that will be required for the shoot. I have worked alongside the rest of the crew to talk about the actors performances from the first test shoot that we all created. We thought that the barmaid could have been looking more busy throughout the piece, she sort of stood off camera until the other characters wanted to buy a drink, we took on board what Lucy evaluated when I showed the test shoots to give her an idea of the idea, shot angles, the fact that this was supposed to be the establishing shot for our piece.

We are planning to film the whole piece tomorrow at Marjons, the test shots have given us an idea of locations, places to film, as the cinematographer it has given me an idea that I would like to make the cutaway shots a lot more focused around what's in the bar, make them longer to give a feel of disorientation. I now know a possible lighting set up that I could stick with, I know where I would like the cameras placed for the establishing shot, we know that we want the music to be turned off as well in the bar, could interfere with the sound recorder.

We had a group meeting today, Lucy showed us a film that we could have a glance at to come up with some ideas for the content in our short film, I realised the ideas of sharp camera movements, the fact that the scene was set at a bar just like ours, we started to think about how we could show that the pace was busy, I started to look at the way that the people moved within the frame, did anyones shoulder become visible within the frame. For example in the film "The Fighter", we were able to notice that the camera wasn't stable, I noticed that the cameraman had shaken the camera, helped to add an element of movement into he frame, the whole piece seemed to flow well, I liked the way that the shots were framed, there were a lot of close ups to show facial expressions, the way that the over the shoulder frames were put together.

I thought that from the test shoot we did, the lighting conditions were similar to that of The fighter, I am still going to go with the idea of the two LED panels as well as the two XF100 cameras.

In the meeting I thought of raising the point that the actors should interact more with each other, showing that they are into the idea i.e. the barmaid to look busy, the shy girl to interact with her drink, I thought that the sounds should be chosen carefully to bring the visuals to life i.e. lots of reverb, a glass smashing, dialogue changed slightly to sound echoey, only an idea.

Contexts of Practice - 4th March

Place/Non-Place

My Journal Article - Living the High Life.

For my Journal Article I have decided to research into the theory that Marc Augé (a French Anthropologist) believed could categorise a place from a non-place, I would like to explore whether these theories could relate to wildlife and their habitats by reviewing a range of wildlife documentaries, could an animal's presence have an impact on a certain location to transform it from a non-place into a place that they can call their own, a bit like when humans visit a location more than once. A non-place is described as somewhere, which doesn’t have necessary links to social or historical events, could be globalisation or tourist attractions, the examples given would be a motorway, hotel room, airport, or a supermarket. However, if a place is more defined as relational, historical, or concerned with identity, his theory believes that it is a place instead of a non-place.

By the year 1995, Marc had written his own book, which was published with the title “Introduction to an Anthropology of Super modernity” which elaborated upon his beliefs of non-place whilst talking about Super-modernity as being the “opposite side of the coin” to Post-Modernity, he writes about the changes within our society which have led to the reproduction of his beliefs for non-place which have been associated with space, time and other elements of his research.

In my opinion I think that wildlife’s presence inside a certain space, could have an impact on turning a non-place into a place. Take an empty forest, nothing lives there which means that there is nothing around to generate relationships so it becomes a non-place, but what if a family of birds were to move in, perhaps they start to mate and build nests, surely this makes the woodland a place as they have taken up residency, created their own relationship in a clearing which will more than likely lead to new life being born or could it revert back as a non-place because these birds or mammals will eventually migrate or travel to another space where they will carry on the cycle of life. This particular cycle of life can be seen in many wildlife documentaries, the series of films that I have chosen to talk about are called “Life Story”, this has been made into a six-part series of wildlife documentaries where David Attenborough outlines the development of certain species of animals but it also talks about the threats that they can encounter through their life, makes me think about super modernity, linking back to Marc’s book where he touches on the social changes in our society, I believe that the animals help one another and over time they form social family groups where they are taught to hunt by their parents i.e. they are brought out to watch the types of hunting strategies that their parents use, the young will need to master these techniques in order to ensure survival, the strategies learnt will most probably be repeated once the young have fully developed and found a partner, we get a feel for a range of wild beasts, land mammals, birds of prey, aquatic animals, we start to understand the differences between their lifestyles and how they go about their daily lives.

David Attenborough’s narration throughout these documentaries takes us as the viewers on the greatest of all adventures – “the journey through life” I feel like the documentaries include the viewers as they use informal language to discuss life on the planet around us, like Marc’s theory of super- modernity we will witness solitude between species in the wild i.e. in the first episode Attenborough introduces the series from South Africa where he watches Meerkat pups emerging from their burrows, the majority of wildlife documentaries I have watched are detailing some of the threats faced by other animals at the beginning of their lives i.e. there were some disturbing shots of Barnacle Geese, I shortly became aware that the family were nesting high on a cliff to escape Arctic foxes, the parents temp their five Goslings to jump from the nest which has been perched off a 400 foot cliff face, the goslings survival depends on the luck, timing, weather conditions and technique of their leap of faith. I think that this series consists of the same codes and conventions too that like Life in Africa, Blue Planet, Frozen Planet, Life in Galapagos as they all tell stories about a wide variety of animals including their lifestyles, prey, preferred habitat, life expectancy and many other interesting pieces of information.

Quote Ideas:

If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then it is a “place” – the rest would be “non-places”, such as for example highways, airports and supermarkets - Marc's book

The creators of the TV series released a hardcover format on 9th October 2014, it was written by Mike Gunton and Rupert Barrington, the UK version was published by BBC Books.

A quote I liked "The Space Doesn't Define the Use, The Behaviour Does, though this could be linked back into animals and the way that they behave between one another.

Moving Narrative - Monologe 3rd March

Thursday 3rd March 2016                                Moving Narrative                                Allister Gall

Monologue - Exercise 3

Exercise 3 This week, using your characters developed, create a 1-2 page monologue scene, in which only one character speaks. Remember, this doesn't mean the script has to be only dialogue.

Paddy (Ex-detective and Cop) observing suspicious activity.

Woah that is bright, where the hell is that light coming from, I better run upstairs to get a closer look out the window. Ah look there is Cameron’s friends car, oh wait I can hear something being said, perhaps I could open this window, could I hear better, c’mon you stupid handle why don’t you budge. Wow I haven’t cleaned my windows in ages, look at the state of them, I can hardly see anything perhaps it was my imagination. I’m sure I had some window lean on my bedside table; she must have moved it from the top, silly bitch. Wait, no I put in the cupboard the other week, oh what am I like, I better go and fetch it, but... this kitchen floor is freezing, where did I put my slippers, I’m always losing things, I need to be more organized.

I thought I left the heating on, it's so cold here, might as well get a drink while I am downstairs, that’s much better. Ah ha there it is, goodness my picture frame, I didn’t leave the window open did I, and no wonder it's so cold. Better find my slippers and head back upstairs, I'll have to buy some more window cleaner, there’s hardly any left in this bottle. Right ok I better be quiet so as to not wake up the household, better still, to not attract any attention to the window, it's completely open, I’ll never be able to reach that handle now, unless I lean out on the ledge, but what if Cameron or his friend notice me, what if I fall, better still if that window swings open any further it could small against the wall.

(Enters back in the window)…That was close, nearly lost my footing, at least the window is shut, didn’t make too much noise either, what was that noise, that sounded like a car door, I better crouch down, wouldn’t want to be seen.

Cameron… it has to be, what an earth is he doing at this time, oh he’s putting his rubbish out haha, but I haven’t put ours out, guess I should probably check my phone calendar, just as I thought it isn’t for another few days, better get back to the window, lets see what he is up too, he did place them in the recycle, I wonder if I was to go around, open up the lid, I have to find out what's in those bags, but what if he spots me, argh dilemma…

Okay it's late and Cameron has just driven off, where has he gone, let's take a look at these recycling bins, it could just be household waste but why was is he carrying the same 2 black bags with him the day before, he could have just dumped them while he was out. I need to be sneaky, if I get caught how the hell am I going to describe my actions, I was hungry haha.

There it is, okay the light is on, is someone home, does he live with someone else, I have never seen anyone else come out of that house, he doesn’t even let his friend in. Would he let me in if I asked, he has a shovel though, wouldn’t want to mess with him, perhaps he is digging a grave for a body, I need to get out of here quick, I can feel my body shaking, but I need to open this lid (opens the lid).
